Lorebooks

A Lorebook is a reusable collection of world entries — side characters, locations, rules — that activate when their keywords come up in chat. Link one Lorebook to multiple Characters to keep a shared world consistent. Lorebooks are in beta and available to (c.ai+) subscribers.

What is a Lorebook?

A Lorebook is a collection of information your Character can reference in chat, such as places, side characters, items, and events.

Each piece of information is stored as an entry with keywords. When you or your Character mentions one of those keywords, the relevant entry becomes available, and your Character can reference it naturally in its response.

Lorebooks are currently in beta: features, access, and availability may change as we improve them. Early access to creating and editing Lorebooks requires a (c.ai+) subscription.

Why use a Lorebook?

Your Character can only hold so much context at once. Details written into the Character Definition take up space in every response, whether they're relevant or not.

A Lorebook keeps those details on standby: an entry stays out of the way until one of its keywords comes up in chat, then helps shape the Character's next response. You get a deeper world without loading every detail into every reply.

Lorebook or Character Definition?

Lorebooks and Character Definitions work best together.

Put it in the Character Definition if…Put it in a Lorebook entry if…
The Character must always remember itIt's only needed when its keywords come up
It's core identity: motivation, voice, or behaviorIt's a world detail: side character, location, faction, event, or rule
It's specific to this one CharacterIt can be shared across multiple Characters

The rule of thumb: always relevant goes in the Definition, sometimes relevant goes in the Lorebook.

Creating a Lorebook

  1. Select Create → Lorebook,  or directly from the lorebook section in Character's creation or edit screen.
  2. Choose + New empty lorebook to start blank, or pick a template for a pre-built structure.
  3. Add entries with content and keywords.
  4. Attach it to one or more Characters. Link the same Lorebook to multiple Characters so they all reference the same people, places, rules, and events.
  5. Hit publish and start chatting.

On Web, standalone creation starts from + Create in the left sidebar; on App, from the + button in the bottom navigation.

Your Lorebook autosaves as you work. Find drafts under the Lorebook tab on your profile.

Lorebook settings

Select Lorebook Settings in the left-hand panel to edit your Lorebook's main details:

  • Cover image — generate one from a text prompt or upload your own.
  • Lorebook title — give your Lorebook a clear name.
  • Description — what you want other people to know about your Lorebook. Think of it as an author's note.
  • Entry Visibility — controls what other users can see of your entries in chat and on your profile. It doesn't affect how the Lorebook works in chat.
    • Full Details — others can see each entry's title, keywords, and content.
    • Hint Only — others can see only titles and keywords. The content stays hidden.

Lorebook Entries

Every entry has three parts:

  • Title — a label for the entry, like "The Corner Café" or "Rules of magic." Titles are just for you and anyone browsing your Lorebook — the Character never sees them.
  • Content — what the Character learns when the entry activates. Characters already know plenty about the real world, so focus on what's unique to yours: private backstory, world rules, relationships, secrets, invented lore.
  • Keywords — the words that activate the entry. When you or the Character mentions one, the Character reads the content and can reference it in the response. Choosing them well matters, so they get their own section below.

Adding an entry

Select + Add a new entry and write anything in the content field. If you'd like a starting point, entry templates live under the + Add a new entry button:

Entry templateGood for

ItemImportant objects, relics, or weapons, and their effects
EventMajor events that shaped the world's history

Culture & ReligionCultural norms, belief systems, gods, rituals, and spiritual practices
SpeciesRaces, creatures, or intelligent lifeforms

Delete an Entry

To delete an entry, select the three dots on the entry, choose Delete, then confirm.

Choosing keywords

Keywords decide whether an entry activates. You can add up to 8 per entry.

  • Specific to the entry's subject: names, nicknames, titles, places, important phrases, and questions users actually type — "what do you look like," "how old are you."
  • Too common to mean anything: words like "the," "you," or "is" appear in every other sentence and will fire the entry constantly.

A keyword that fires constantly spends space on details that aren't relevant. A keyword nobody types never fires at all.

Publishing & Sharing

Draft vs. Published

A new Lorebook starts as a Draft. While it's a Draft, you cannot use the Lorebook in chat - you can only work on the details of the Lorebook like the description, image, entries, and visibility settings.

When you're ready to start testing or release it to the world, select Publish. Your Lorebook goes through a brief, near-instant review, then it's live: any public Character linked to it will use the published version in chat for everyone.

Editing a published Lorebook highlights your changed entries in yellow until you decide what to do with them:

  • Discard changes — drop your edits and keep the previously published version live.
  • Update — publish your edits. Everyone who chats with your Character gets the latest content.

Ownership

Lorebooks can only be linked to Characters you own - but anyone chatting with those Characters experiences your lore through them.

Other users can't edit your Lorebook or attach it to their own Characters, and vice versa.

Delete a Lorebook

Go to the Lorebook tab on your profile.

  • On Web, click the three dots next to the Lorebook, then Delete.
  • In the Mobile App, long-press the Lorebook, then Delete.

Linking a Lorebook to a Character

  1. In the Lorebook workspace, find Linked Characters in the left-hand panel.
  2. Select Add Character to open the Character selection panel.
  3. Browse the Characters you own, find the one you want to connect, then link it.

Once linked, the Character can use the Lorebook whenever relevant keywords appear in chat. Link the same Lorebook to one Character or a whole cast — they'll all pull from the same canon.

Lorebooks in chat

Finding Lore-tagged Characters

When searching for Characters, you can filter by whether they have a Lorebook. Characters with an active Lorebook also get a +Lore tag on their profile and on discovery surfaces — a signal that you're stepping into a deeper, world-guided experience.

Chatting

You don't need to do anything special. When you or the Character mentions a keyword, the Character automatically knows the relevant entry's content.

Viewing lore in chat

In any chat with a Lore-tagged Character, open the Lorebook viewer from the chat menu to see the active world without breaking the scene.

If you own the Lorebook, a pencil icon lets you edit entries right from the viewer — so if you catch the Character drifting mid-conversation, you can fix the entry on the spot and keep going.

Reading well-made Lorebooks is also one of the fastest ways to learn how other creators structure entries, choose keywords, and organize shared worlds.
