Frequently Asked Questions
These FAQs cover how appeals work: what you can appeal, how to submit one, and what to expect afterward.
What is an appeal?
If we've taken action on something you created — like removing a Character, Post, Scene, or Voice — because it violated our Community Guidelines, you can ask us to take a second look.
How do I submit an appeal?
When we take a moderation action, we email you to let you know. To appeal, just reply directly to that notification email and tell us why you think the decision should be reconsidered. That's it — your reply opens your appeal automatically.
What can I appeal?
You can appeal moderation actions taken on Characters, Feed Posts, Scenes, and Voices.
Can I appeal more than once?
No. You get one appeal per item. Our decision on your appeal is final, and additional replies won't trigger another review.
What are the possible outcomes?
Either your appeal is approved — the original action is reversed and your content is restored — or it's rejected, meaning the original decision stands. We'll email you either way.
Will appealing hurt my account?
No. Submitting an appeal in good faith has no negative effect on your account.
What makes a strong appeal?
Explain clearly why you believe the content follows our Community Guidelines. Be specific and honest — reviewers compare your explanation directly against the guideline that was flagged.
I'm in the European Union — is there a different way to appeal?
Yes. In addition to the process above, EU users can contest a moderation decision under the EU Digital Services Act (DSA) by emailing appeals@character.ai. You may also refer a disputed decision to a certified out-of-court dispute settlement body. See our EU Digital Services Act article for full details.
