Update: Privacy Policy and Regional Privacy Disclosures

Effective date: July 1, 2026

We’re updating our Privacy Policy and Regional Privacy Disclosures to add information about how Character.ai’s proprietary AI models were originally trained, and to provide additional information for users in the EU and UK.

This update does not remove or reduce your rights, and it does not add new requirements for users.

The official Privacy Policy and Regional Privacy Disclosures remain the more robust documents. This article is only a plain-language summary to help explain what changed.

1. Information about our initial model training

We added language to the Privacy Policy explaining that certain information was collected in connection with the initial development and training of Character.ai’s proprietary large language models.

The updated Privacy Policy also states that Character.ai no longer carries out that particular processing.

2. More information about what models were trained on

The Regional Privacy Disclosures now include additional language explaining that Character.ai’s proprietary large language models were trained primarily on publicly available data, including large-scale third-party datasets and open-source collections.

3. Your AI training opt-out

The Regional Privacy Disclosures also state that you can opt out of your personal data being used to train and improve Character.ai’s AI models.

You can exercise this right at any time by following the instructions in our FAQ article.

4. EEA and UK privacy disclosures

For users in the European Economic Area and the UK, we also updated the Regional Privacy Disclosures to make the legal bases for different types of processing even clearer.

The updated disclosures include a clearer reference to AI training and model improvement, and spell out privacy rights including access, objection, rectification, erasure, restriction, portability, withdrawal of consent, and the right to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority.

We also clarified language related to age verification and international data transfers.

What is not changing?

This update does not remove or reduce your privacy rights.

You still have rights to access, delete, correct, object, and opt out where applicable. You can also opt out of your data being used to train and improve AI models at any time.

Where can I read the full policy?
