  • Does Character Calls work for one way communication (Character Voice only) or two way conversation (User and Character can both use voice to chat?)

    Through Character Calls, users can now have seamless two way conversations and talk with Characters in the same way one would have a phone call. 

  • Can I speak in a different language? Will it respond to me in English or the language I speak in?

    Yes!  In addition to English, we also support Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, Korean, Japanese, Mandarin Chinese, and more.
  • Will this be available on Web anytime soon? 

    Character Calls is now available on web for all users. Try it here: https://character.ai/.
  • Is there a transcript of the Call available so I can view it like a text thread?

    Yes! Call conversations are also stored as text chat, so users can always reference it later. 
  • What is Character Voice?  What are the sub features?


    Character Voice     is a suite of features that can take Characters and conversations to the next level through adding a Voice to a Character and/or creating a Voice. Character Voice currently has three key subfeatures.

      • Character.AI’s Voice library includes Voices that other users have created for the Community to choose from and assign to their Characters or existing 1:1 chats.  Our team has also created a selection of pre-made Voices.   
      • A creative AI tool where users can create their own Voices by uploading an audio sample. Users can add the Voices to Characters they create, and also attach them to pre-existing Characters for 1:1 chats. 
      • Users can create, share, search, and discover Voices with “public” visibility.  These public, shared Voices can be used as default Character Voices by Character creators, or can be used by any users as their personal Voice preference for any Character in 1:1 chats.
  • Who can use Character Voice?  

    Character Voice is available to all users, free of charge.
  • I don’t have to pay for a c.ai+ subscription to use any of the features under Character Voice?

    No!  Character Voice is available for free to all users. 
  • How can I make a Voice?

    Tap the Create (+) button at the bottom of the Character.AI app home screen and tap “Voice”. You will be able to create a Voice by either recording a sound or uploading an audio clip. 
  • Are the Voices I create private, or can others see and use it?

    You can choose the visibility of a Voice you make during the creation process. 

      • Private Voices can only be seen and used by you. 
      • Public Voices can be seen and used by anyone.

  • Am I able to share the Voice I create with others?

    Currently, sharing Voices can only be done through Characters.
  • Can I assign a Voice for a Character that I interact with regularly but did not create?

    Yes!  You can assign a Voice you create or one of our pre-generated Voices to any 1:1 chat you have with a Character, even if you did not create that specific Character.
  • Can I share a Character with the Voice I added with others?

    Yes! If you attach a Voice to a Character you have created, you can share it with others, and they will hear the Voice you attached to the Character. 
  • How can I report a Voice?

    Select the Voice from Voice selection / search, and when the detail view expands, tap the Flag icon on the top right of the Voice detail card.
  • How can I give feedback on Character Voice?

    Apart from reporting a Voice, you can give feedback on the quality of a Voice when you create the Voice. 

      • When you are presented with the generated preview of the Voice, you have the opportunity to rate the Voice and add any additional feedback you may have.
      • You are also able to give detailed audio feedback for a specific message via the stars that appear under a message and by clocking “tell us more”. 
  • Does this feature work for one way communication (Character Voice only) or two way conversation (User and Character can both use Voice only to chat)?

    Currently this feature works for one way communication.  
  • Is this feature available in Group Chat or just 1:1 chats?

    Character Voice is currently available in 1:1 chats only.
  • Can I easily turn this feature off and on? Sometimes I just want to use text.

    Yes, to turn it off click the audio wave on the top right of the chat.
  • Where is Voice available?  Is this available to use on the app or web?

    This feature is currently only available on our mobile app (free to download on iOS and Android).  We plan to follow up with web implementation soon.  
  • What can I use Character Voice for?
     

    1. Possibilities are as infinite as the imagination!  Our users are the best at inventing and discovering use cases, but this new feature will make the Character.AI experience even more immersive by allowing Characters to not only have realistic Voices, but in true Character.AI form, aspire to convey nuances in emotion and tone. 

    2. Whether you've asked a Character to tell you and your friends an adventure story, chat about your day, or motivate you to work out again, Characters customized with a Voice can feel more lively, emotive, and engaging!

    3. Voice may convey a lot of information that text may not.  The integration of Voice into our interactions with Characters can not only heighten the sense of realism, but also the power of imagination.
  • How is this different from the legacy character-voice / text to speech feature?

    Character Voice is built on a new audio model with more richness in voice and additional options.
