What is Impersonation?
Impersonation is a violation of Character.AI's Community Guidelines. Users may not create accounts or bots that misrepresent their identity or that of another person, brand, or organization.
What counts as impersonation?
Creating an account or bot that uses another person's name, image, or likeness or that is designed to be indistinguishable from an existing account, is considered impersonation. This includes usernames that closely mimic another account (e.g., a one-character variation), duplicated profile images, and replicated branding. Failing to disclose their true identity in their username, display name, or bio does not exempt an account from this policy.
Parody, satire, and fan accounts
Users may create parody, satire, or fan accounts that reference a real person or brand, as long as they are not misleading. These accounts must include a clear and visible disclosure in the username and/or bio indicating their nature (e.g., "JohnDoe – Parody Account"). Accounts shall not copy the original account’s username, profile picture, or branding. Content must be clearly humorous or exaggerated, not deceptive. These accounts may not be used to scam users, or to harm someone’s reputation. It must be evident at all times that the account is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or representative of the person or organization it references.
What is allowed
Character.AI permits parody, fan content, and commentary about public figures when clearly framed as such. This includes fictional or fantastical content involving public figures, portrayals of historical figures, as well as satire or social commentary.
What is not allowed
Users creating content that spreads false or misleading information that may cause real-world harm, impersonate a private individual without their consent, engage in scams, phishing, or financial fraud, or participate in spam or coordinated inauthentic behavior.
Enforcement
Accounts that impersonate another person, group, or organization in a deceptive or misleading manner may be permanently suspended under our Community Guidelines.
Who Can File an Impersonation Claim?
Only the impersonated individual or their authorized legal representative may file a complaint. Third-party reports will not be accepted.
