We at Character.AI are committed to providing our service in compliance with applicable requirements under the Australian Online Safety Act and the Online Safety Codes and Standards, which are designed to help promote online safety for Australians and impose certain obligations on service providers relating to illegal and harmful content.
We use tools and safeguards to protect users from illegal and harmful content including child sexual exploitation and abuse material (CSAM), pro-terror content, and extreme violence material. We also take steps to protect users, and in particular users under the age of 18, from age-restricted content and other content which violates our Terms of Service and Community Guidelines.
We continue to enhance our trust and safety controls and processes, including through partnerships with third-party safety groups, to help minimize the likelihood of illegal and harmful content being present on the service and to address emerging trends and potential harms.
Please see the “Reporting Content on Character.AI” section below for more information on how Australian users can report illegal and harmful content on Character.AI.
If you or someone you know see distressing content or experienced harm online, there are third-party support resources recommended by Australia’s eSafety Commissioner which are available to you. You can also get help and support from one of the following services:
- Lifeline Australia: 13 11 14

Reporting Content on Character.AI
If you believe our Terms of Service or Community Guidelines have been violated by a user, you can use the flag function (which appears when you click on a specific user, character, chat, or post). You can also file a report by submitting a ticket on our Support Page.
When you file a report, you must choose a reason from a list of potential violations of our Terms of Service or Community Guidelines (e.g., hate speech, illegal activities, harassment, etc.). Our Trust & Safety team will then review the reported item and take appropriate action.
We will acknowledge receipt of your submission, review your report, and consider how your feedback may help us improve our processes. We aim to review reports promptly and diligently; please bear in mind that for quality assurance, our review may take longer in more complex cases.
